Dianatal® – Protect the Perineum, Help Prevent Neonatal Trauma

Clinically Proven

Dianatal® Obstetric Gel was formulated by Swiss obstetrician Dr Andreas Schaub to ease vaginal delivery and reduce the likelihood of damage to the perineum.

PD Dr. Verena Geissbuehler, Switzerland and Urogynaecologist Prof Jeffrey Wilkinson of Duke University Medical Centre, USA commented:

“As an expert in water deliveries and natural birth methods I see in Dianatal® the true potential to further optimise our obstetric services for the benefits of mothers and newborns.”

“It would be very helpful for my patients to have Dianatal® available for regular use. It will likely contribute to the well being of mothers and babies throughout the USA and the world. As a Urogynaecologist with training in repair of obstetric fistula, the introduction of a product that could reduce length of childbirth and associated trauma, would possibly be helpful in the prevention of limitation of this devastating condition as well.”

Clinical Effect of Dianatal® Obstetric Gel

Dianatal® Obstetric Gel has mucoadhesive and friction reducing properties which reduce both static and dynamic friction significantly to enhance the progress of the delivery[1], during both stages of labour, protecting the perineum.

The duration of the second stage of labour, low parity and vaginal-operative births are independent risk factors for an increased chance of complications during childbirth such as vaginal and perineal damage[2,3,4,5,6] and neonatal trauma.

Clinical trials with nulliparous women revealed that Dianatal® Obstetric Gel reduced the second stage of labour by up to 30% (stage I: 65 min, stage II: 26 min)[7]. For women without epidural anaesthesia or amniotomy. Dianatal® has been shown to reduce the length of the birth by 106 minutes (30%)[8].

Birth trauma, including childbirth induced perineal trauma can be associated with an increased risk of multiple complications such as sexual dysfunction, painful perineum and urinary/faecal incontinence after birth.[9,10,11,12]

Recent data also shows that perineal tears and/or episiotomies bear a significantly greater risk of a second -degree tear or worse in a subsequent birth.[13]

Use of Dianatal® Obstetric Gel

Dianatal® Obstetric Gel should be applied by a midwife or doctor into the birth canal during routine vaginal examinations. This application should occur following the onset of regular contractions during stage I labour during the first routine vaginal examination. It is advised that patients discuss inclusion of Dianatal® into their birthing plan during pregnancy.

Safety of Dianatal® Obstetric Gel

Dianatal® Obstetric Gel is currently used widely in Europe, and has been used to facilitate over 10,000 births since its launch in 2007.
